Billets for the Edmonton Prospects Baseball Club

Thank you so much for your interest in becoming a host family for one or more of the Edmonton Prospects players. The Prospects are thrilled to be a part of the Edmonton community and excited about the inaugural season at John Fry Stadium. Here's what you need to know:

1. Prospects Season: Billets should be aware that the season is a short one, running from late May until August. Accordingly, host families are required for Prospects players beginning around the end of May, with players leaving to return to college around mid-August.
2. Prospects players: It is anticipated that Prospects players will include local Canadian athletes, as well as players from various universities and colleges as far away as California, New York, Louisiana and Texas. Wherever these players are from, they share one thing in common, they are combining the pursuit of their dreams in baseball with a commitment to completing their academic goals. This requires discipline and dedication. You will find that this translates into college players that are admirable young men. They are polite, respectful and grateful guests with few exceptions, for our host families.
3. What is expected from the host family?
  a) Because the Prospects play approximately 50 games in 70 days, half of these on the road, the players will be away for significant stretches of time. As a rule of thumb, you can expect the players to be away from Thursday (or Friday) to Sunday, almost every second weekend.
  b) The principal role of the host family will be to provide accommodation. The players will be at the field most days, playing an aggressive schedule so accommodation is key to these players.
  c) To a lesser degree, host families will be expected to provide some meals and occasional transportation to John Fry Stadium when the team is at home. Again, with the number of games and travel, this should be a modest requirement.
  d) To the extent host families can assist with transportation (for example, dropping a player off at the stadium) that would be helpful. For the most part, players tend to make their own transportation arrangements.
4. How many billets are required?: With a strong core of athletes from the Edmonton area, billets are only needed for approximately 15 Prospects players. If possible, it is preferred that players be “doubled up”, that is that host families take 2 players. We understand this to be easier both for players and the host families. With the short season, significant travel and low demands of the Prospects players, a room with 2 beds is really ideal.
5.

What do the Prospects offer host families?: Given the short season, Prospects reimburse host families $250 per player per season for their expenses. In addition, host families receive 2 season tickets for all Prospects’ home games plus 2 tickets to the Prospects Golf Tournament. If there are any budding little league stars in the family, Prospects players also serve as excellent mentors for some informal instruction in the backyard. Any host family preferring to donate their hospitality for the short summer season, will receive our sincere gratitude.
