July 7th Game Recap – by Emma Caiger
It was a beautiful evening for baseball as your Edmonton Prospects took on the Medicine Hat Mavericks following three winning games on the road. After a dominant 13-4 win over the first place Mavericks in Medicine Hat on Wednesday, the Prospects fell 3-2 at home on Thursday to end their winning streak.
Noah Gapp had a good outing, pitching 6 solid innings and allowing 3 unearned runs on two errors. Relief pitchers Brenden Wiun and closer Brock Whittlesey both had solid appearances on the mound, allowing only one hit each with no runs, and no walks.
Cory Scammell singled in the second and was brought home by a Funderburk double to score the first run of the game. Funderburk would later score in the 7th with Kyle McComb at the plate. Rookie Funderburk went a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate but it wouldn’t be enough to get the W over the Mavericks.
Our defence left a little something to be desired on Thursday. The Maverick’s William Salas got to first on an error in the third and would later come in to score while Anthony Calton walked and was also brought home during that inning to bring the score to 2-1 for the Mavericks. Calton would score again in the 5th due to another error in what would be the last run for the Mavericks for the night.
The Prospects left eight men on base by the time the 27th out was recorded; they just weren’t able to capitalize on having runners in scoring position. It was a tough loss for the Prospects, with those two defensive errors being the determining factor over who would come up with the win.
Edmonton will take on the Mavericks again tonight at 7:05pm at the Edmonton Ballpark- come and check them out as they try and win the series over Medicine Hat.
