By Len Nunes There were built-in excuses if the Prospects lost Saturday night hosting the Medicine Hat Mavericks. Our team had just bussed from Regina back home to Edmonton to host the Mavericks who had won 7 of their past 8 games making them one of the hottest teams in the WMBL. The memory of a blowout loss in Medicine Hat on June 11th must have helped fuel our boys because the Prospects would win 15-2! With so much offense to talk about this story will start with our pitching. Zaine Foth-Thomas was the starting pitcher for our Prospects and would not allow a baserunner until the 3rd inning. Two Mavericks would get on base in that inning but a 6-4-3 doubleplay resolved that situation. A run would score against Foth-Thomas in the 4th and once it did he struck out the last two batters to end the inning. The final line on Foth-Thomas was an impressive 6IP 4H 1R 1BB 7K. Erik Sabrowski would come in to pitch a 1-2-3 7th inning that included two strikeouts. Scott Kramers would come in to pitch the final two frames retiring the first four batters he faced before allowing a run. The Prospects offense Saturday night started immediately! A leadoff single by Derek Shedden was brought home by the batter hitting second Zane Takhar. With Takhar on third and 2-out, Nick Spillman would single him home. With the bases now loaded, Anthony Cusati would hit a 2-RBI single to make the score 4-0 but the Prospects were not done yet. Mackenzie Parlow, the ninth batter of the inning, completed the scoring with a RBI single of his own to make it 5-0 Prospects after one inning. With the score 5-1 going into the bottom of the 6th inning, the Prospects offense would reignite. Takhar and Jake Lanferman would lead the inning off with singles being advanced by a productive out from Michael Gahan. Spillman would hit a sacrifice fly to make it 6-1. Aidan Huggins would hit a RBI double followed up by a RBI single care of Dean Olson which made the score 8-1 and chased the Mavericks reliever from the game. Parlow would collect his second RBI of the night with a double to bring the score up to 9-1. The bottom of the 7th inning started much the same as the 6th with Takhar and Lanferman reaching base to start things off. Gahan would join them on the basepaths, extending his personal hit streak to 7 games, loading them up with no outs. A wild pitch would send one run across the plate and another Spillman sacrifice fly would bring our score to 11-1. The Prospects would start the bottom of the 8th again loading the bases with no out. Lanferman collected a painful RBI collecting a base via being hit by a pitch. Spillman would collect RBI 4 and 5 with a single making the score 14-2. Huggins would collect the last RBI of the game bringing us to our final score of 15-2. Player Of The Game: 5 RBI man Nick Spillman earns this honour. Two timely singles and two sacrifice flies by Spillman were keys in the Prospects big offensive night. Play Of The Game: In the bottom of the 1st with our Prospects already up 2-0, Anthony Cusati would come up with the bases loaded and 2-out. An out here could have killed the momentum the Prospects started with but Cusati came through with a 2-RBI base knock!
