Medicine Hat Avenges Blowout Loss
By Len Nunes
One of the many quirks of the game of baseball is the classic pattern of one day a team experiences a blowout win only to lose the rematch the very next day. After winning by 13 runs on Saturday, our Prospects lost 5-2 during Sunday’s matinee rematch versus the Medicine Hat Mavericks.
Prospects starting pitcher Andrew Grieder was making his second start of the season against the Mavericks. Sometimes a team just seems to have a pitcher’s number and the Mavs seem to have something on Grieder scoring 3 runs in just over two innings of play.
Jye Deeble would come in to pitch in the 3rd inning with 2-on and 1-out. He would get Chris Rodriguez to fly out to centerfielder Dean Olson who would then gun down Colton Wright trying to advance to 3rd. Deeble stayed in to pitch the 4th inning and would face the minimum three batters…sort off .With 2-out Blake Rowlett reached on a single but was picked off on a snap throw behind him at first base by Prospects catcher Andrew Cusati.
Scott Gillespie had pitched 10 innings sporting a perfect 0.00 ERA. Entering Sunday’s game in the 5th inning, Gillespie allowed his first two runs against which made the score 5-0 Mavericks. Gillespie would pitch three more innings on the afternoon allowing only one hit against him.
The Prospects offense would hit the scoreboard in the bottom of the 5th via a RBI groundout by Jake Lanferman. A momentary complete loss of control by the Mavericks pitcher then loaded up the bases with two hit batters and a walk but our Prospects could not capitalize.
Nick Spillman led off the bottom of the 8th inning with a triple for our Prospects and was cashed in immediately by Zane Takhar closing the scoreboard gap to 3. Unfortunately, 5-2 would be the final score of the Mavericks.
Player Of The Game: Andrew Mirasty came in to pitch the 9th inning for the Prospects and maintained his 0.00 ERA.
Play Of The Game: We had not one but two triples hit in this game and they will share this honour. Aidan Huggins would hit a 2-out triple in the 2nd inning and Nick Spillman would hit a leadoff triple in the 8th inning.
